The phone woke her. She thought it was the middle of the night, then saw it wasnât even ten-thirty. Sheâd only just fallen asleep. David, sounding odd. Joy hadnât shown up for a dinner date with Caroline, and she wasnât answering her cell. He wondered if Hannah had heard from her.
She hadnât, Hannah said, but maybe Joy had forgotten. Maybe sheâd shut off her phone and gone to bed early. Talking down his worry even while she took it on.
âThe thing is, the dinner was Joyâs idea,â David said. âShe called Caroline a couple of days ago and said she needed to talk. Sheâs been really depressed, thinking about quitting the internship, quitting law school.â
Quitting law school? The first Hannah had heard of it. âDid you call her apartment?â
âThey donât have a landline and I donât know her roommatesâ cell numbers.â There was a long pause. Then he said, âOkay, this is what Iâll do. Iâll stop by the apartment early tomorrow morning, catch her before she goes to work and see whatâs going on. Youâre probably right. She must have forgotten about dinner.â
âYouâll call me as soon as you talk to her? I have an early meeting, so leave a message on my cell.â
âAbsolutely.â Then he added, âHey, donât you start worrying. Iâm sure everythingâs fine.â
âWhoâs worried?â Hannah said, and she heard him snort. A world class worrier, heâd once called her.
As she hung up, she heard William coming up the stairs, pausing outside their room and moving on. If she called to him, heâd come in and sheâd tell him about Joy, and heâd say everything was going to be okay. And sheâd feel the way she had before on the back porch. Together, but not together. Disoriented, lost in space. Sheâd handle this on her own.
She thought she wouldnât be able to sleep, but she did, fitfully, until the sound of water rushing through pipes woke her at four. William taking a shower. She lay in bed, listening to him move around. After she heard the door close and his car pull out of the driveway, she tried to fall back asleep. An hour later she gave up, put on sweats and took the dog out. The street was empty, the only sound the clamor of birds. The eastern sky held the faintest hint of pink, and the morning air was almost unbearably sweet.
